A
highlight of the premiere was the presentation of the
Distinguished Service Award
To
THALIA MARA
The
presentation was made by Mississippi Educational Broadcasting's
(MEB) Executive Director, Marie Antoon, in the form of
a plaque, which recognized her service to dance and the performing arts
in Mississippi.
ETV's
Director of Production, Peter Zapletal, also presented Thalia
Mara with flowers as a token of MEB's heartfelt appreciation for her
contributions throughout the years.
ETV's
Director of Television, Ed Van Cleef made note of additional
milestones. ~ ETV's collaboration with Thalia started with the filming
and broadcast of Ravel's BOLERO. This Ballet was broadcast nationwide
by ETV in 1981, the performing company was "The Jackson Ballet"
with choreography by Thalia Mara.

USA International Ballet Competition
DANCERS was
produced by Mississippi ETV in High-definition television and was simulcast
in HDTV on ETV's digital Channel 20
Dancers USA International
Ballet Competition, is a one-hour documentary that features the
young dancers from the 2002 USA International Ballet Competition in
Jackson this summer. DANCERS reveals behind- the-scenes footage
of the performers as they prepare mentally as well as physically to
go onstage. It captures those first moments after the performance and
explores dancers passions and aspirations.
WAPT's Gene Edwards
is the producer, writer and narrator of the documentary that includes
150 hours of taped performances, interviews, rehearsals and backstage
moments. Edie Greene and Peter Zapletal of Mississippi ETV are the co-executive
producers of the program. DANCERS was made possible by a grant
from the Gertrude C. Ford Foundation as part of the Gertrude C. Ford
Arts Series.
