at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C.
Walter Anderson wrote
the story, Robinson, the Pleasant History of an Unusual Cat, to entertain
and educate his children. It was inspired by a neighbor's cat who would
sneak into the Anderson home, at night, and walk up and down the keys
of their piano. The storyline reveals how an ordinary cat becomes aware
of his unusual talents and uses them in extraordinary ways.
It was such a charming
yet powerful tale that in 1998, Lester Senter (Mississippi mezzo-soprano)
convinced Colman Pearce, Conductor of the Mississippi Symphony in Jackson,
Mississippi, to write an original musical setting for chamber orchestra
which we have called Robinson, the Cat. It premiered with the Mississippi
Symphony in that year and has been performed over twenty times in concerts
throughout Mississippi, as well as in Austin, Texas, and Dublin, Ireland.
It was recorded at the Dublin performance and will be released as a
CD later this year.
Robinson & Friends
has been invited to the Smithsonian Discovery Series for three performances
January 9 - 10, 2004, to close the Anderson art exhibit which will be
there September 26 - January 11 in celebration of the 100th anniversary
of Anderson's birth.
The Thalia Mara
Arts International Foundation is presenting Robinson & Friends on
November 14, 2003, at Belhaven College Center for the Arts. Don't miss
four new premier performances based on the works of Walter Anderson
-- a collaboration of Mississippi's best: Mezzo-Soprano, Lester Senter;
Composer/Conductor, Colman Pearce and his orchestra; Composer/Conductor,
Dr. Timothy Coker and his Men's Chorus; Belhaven College Dance Department
and Choreographers Stephen Wynne and Amy Roark-McIntosh; Video Projectionist,

Springs, Mississippi, and The Dixon Gallery & Gardens in Memphis,

Exhibit.
As Mississippians,
we are justly proud of the work of Walter Anderson and the recognition
afforded him by the Smithsonian, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science,
the Mississippi Museum of Art, and other museums showcasing his art.
